Back in the ’50s and ’60s, The Wallpaper Manufacturers organisation ran a series of full-page advertisements in The Architectural Review aimed at architects and interior designers. They not only featured wallpaper designs by Lucienne Day, Terence Conran, Jacqueline Groag, Joyce Storey and William Gear but also the ads were often illustrated to show wallpapers in interior settings, and these conceptual illustrations were created by David Gentleman and Dennis Bailey, among others. They all look the epitome of commercial art from that distant time, but they still have enormous charm. Take a look.

Many of designers and illustrators featured in the WPM advertisements attended the Royal College of Art during the 1950s. The RCA made a point of forging links directly with industry. Roger Nicholson (1922 –1986) a tutor of textiles in the fifties often commissioned RCA students and alumni to design wallpaper or illustrate advertisements for his client, Wallpaper Manufacturers Ltd, among these was Romek Marber, John Drummond, David Gentleman, Eric Thomas.
