Hi Mike, Happy New Year! And thanks for posting this piece. I clearly remember reading it in Design Week because although I was (and still am) a big fan of his work, I didn't know much about him. The IPCRESS File is also my all-time favourite book AND film - a rare example of both, perhaps for different reasons, being worthy of each other (if you know what I mean?). Surely, Hawkey, like Barney Bubbles, is one of the unsung heroes of British Graphic Design due more serious attention? I would love to see more of his work.

Paul Gorman

Dear Mike
Sterling stuff.
As the author of the Barney Bubbles book (and a major Hawkey fan) I'd recommend you do the decent thing.
A book about your man here is long overdue and you are evidently the man to do it.

My Name is Ray Williams. Photographer. It would be nice to have a credit for working with Ray Hawkey at CondeNast. I later also worked with Ray over the weekend making a still life. which I thought was the first colour (wallpaper) page for the Daily Express. It was Ray's Idea to make up a stillife of her life on Princess Alexandra's wedding day, Wednesday April 24 1963. Ray gave me the credit, "Designed and Photographed by Ray Williams.

Stumbled on this site largely by accident and was delighted to find Raymond Hawkey's work - particularly the 4-3-2-1 graphic from the Daily Express, which I saw at the age of 17 and has remained fresh in my mind since then.

I subsequently went on to study at Glasgow School of Art and am currently still practicing as a freelance graphic designer & art director, thanks in part to the influence of artists like RH. Great stuff.

david cripps is alive and well living in ramsgate, where he was part of the recent open studio event.

Mike

Very glad to hear that Martin.

Richard C Evans

Great read.

Big fan of Brownjohn, but Hawkey got there ahead him with Bond with the 63 Pan Thunderball cover.
Similar brand of cruel, modern cool predating Goldfinger titles and publicity, (and the From Russia With Love titles).

A book would be good.
